Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette vs Body Mist: What Is the Difference?
Share
If you have ever wondered why one bottle says eau de parfum, another says eau de toilette and a third is sold as a body mist, you are not alone. The labels describe one thing: how concentrated the fragrance is. Here is what that means in practice.
It comes down to concentration
Every fragrance is a mix of perfume oils and a carrier, usually alcohol. The more oil in the mix, the stronger and richer the scent tends to be. The exact percentages vary between brands, but the usual order from strongest to lightest looks like this:
- Parfum (or extrait): the most concentrated, often 20 percent oil or more. Rich and intimate, usually worn in small amounts.
- Eau de parfum (EDP): commonly around 15 to 20 percent. A strong, balanced choice for everyday and evening wear.
- Eau de toilette (EDT): commonly around 5 to 15 percent. Lighter and fresher, popular for warm weather and daytime.
- Body mist: the lightest. Designed to be sprayed generously for a soft, casual veil of scent.
These are typical ranges, not fixed rules, so treat them as a guide rather than a guarantee.
What this means for how you wear them
Eau de parfum usually needs fewer sprays and tends to stay with you longer, which is why it suits office days and evenings out. Eau de toilette feels brighter and more transparent, and many people like to reapply it through the day. Body mists are the easiest to wear: spray on skin and hair or over clothes, as often as you like, for a light, cheerful scent.
Which one should you choose?
- Want one signature scent for most occasions? Choose an eau de parfum. Our 100ml Designer range and Dubai range are made at eau de parfum strength.
- Want something light for hot weather or the gym bag? A fresh fragrance or a body mist is a better fit.
- Want a low-cost way to try a style? Our 50ml Exclusive range is a good starting point.
- Want a light, fun scent you can reapply freely? Browse the body mists.
Does a higher concentration always smell better?
No. Concentration changes strength and how long the scent lasts, but it does not decide whether you like the smell. A light, well-made eau de toilette can be more enjoyable than a heavy parfum you find overwhelming. Longevity also depends on your skin, the weather and where you spray, so two people can wear the same bottle and get different results.
A simple way to combine them
Layering is a good trick: use a body mist as a base on skin after a shower, then add a single spray of perfume on your pulse points. You get a softer overall scent that is easy to refresh later.
