Oud Explained: What It Smells Like and How to Wear It

Oud is one of the most talked about ingredients in perfume, especially in Middle Eastern fragrance. It has a reputation for being deep, smoky and luxurious. If you have never worn it, the name can be a little intimidating. This guide explains what oud is, what it smells like and how to start wearing it.

What is oud?

Oud, also called agarwood, is a dark, resin-rich wood that forms inside certain trees when they are affected by a particular mould. The tree produces the resin as a response, and over time the wood becomes fragrant. Real natural oud is rare and costly, which is why many modern oud fragrances use a blend of natural and synthetic materials to recreate the character at a more accessible price.

What does oud smell like?

There is no single oud smell, but most people describe a combination of these qualities:

  • Woody and smoky, like a dark wooden cabinet or a dying fire.
  • Warm and slightly sweet, with a balsamic, resinous depth.
  • Sometimes leathery or earthy, especially in more intense blends.

In perfumery, oud is rarely worn alone. It is usually blended with rose, saffron, amber, vanilla, spices or musk, which softens its edges and makes it easier to wear.

How to wear oud well

  • Start with less. Oud scents are rich and tend to project. Begin with one or two sprays and see how the scent develops.
  • Match it to the moment. Oud is often loved for evenings, cooler weather and special occasions, although softer oud blends work in daytime too.
  • Give it time. The opening can be sharp or smoky. The warmer, rounder side appears as it settles on your skin.
  • Apply to clothing carefully. A little on a scarf or jacket can carry the scent for a long time, but test on a hidden spot first.

Oud fragrances to try

Here are some oud options in the Dubai Scents range, with the notes as described on each product page:

Is oud only for men?

No. Oud has no gender. Blends with rose, vanilla and fruit can feel soft and romantic, while blends with leather, spice and smoke feel bolder. Choose by the notes you enjoy, not by the label.

The simple takeaway

Oud is a dark, smoky, resinous wood note, usually softened with amber, rose, spice or musk. If you are curious, start with a 50ml bottle and one or two sprays, and let it develop for a while before you decide.
