Middle Eastern Perfumes for Beginners: Where to Start

Middle Eastern fragrance has become one of the most talked about areas of perfume, and shoppers in South Africa are noticing. Euromonitor, which tracks the fragrance market, lists affordable Middle Eastern scents as a theme in its report on fragrances in South Africa, although the full report is behind a paywall. If you are curious but not sure where to begin, this guide will help.

What makes Middle Eastern perfumes different?

The tradition leans on rich, warm and long-lasting ingredients. Compared with many fresh, light Western scents, Middle Eastern fragrances often feel deeper, sweeter and more layered. You will see the same building blocks again and again:

  • Oud: a smoky, resinous wood. Read our guide to what oud smells like.
  • Amber: warm, golden and slightly sweet.
  • Musk: soft, clean and skin-like.
  • Rose and saffron: floral and spicy, with a luxurious feel.
  • Vanilla, sandalwood and spice: comforting, creamy and warm.

Easy first scents to try

You do not have to begin with the boldest oud. These options from our range are good starting points:

  • For something soft and clean: Lovali Opulent Musk, built around white musk, powdery florals, creamy sandalwood and warm amber.
  • For something floral: Taif Rose, a delicate bouquet of Arabian roses in soft, elegant notes.
  • For something fresh: Lovali Opulent Dubai, with bright citrus and aquatic notes over musk, amber and soft woods.
  • For something rich and sweet: Ameerah Arab, opening with saffron and sweet fruits, then rose and jasmine over oud, amber, vanilla and musk.
  • For something deep and spicy: Khaltat Night or Hayati, both rich oriental blends with oud, amber, vanilla and musk.

How to wear them

  • Use fewer sprays than you think. Rich scents project well, so one or two sprays go a long way.
  • Match the season. Warm, sweet and woody scents often feel best in cooler weather and evenings, while musk and citrus-led blends are easier in the heat.
  • Let it settle. The first few minutes are not the whole story. Judge the scent after it has had time on your skin.

Where to start if you are unsure

Begin with a 50ml bottle from our Exclusive range, such as Taif Rose or Sahara Oud, then move to a larger bottle from the Dubai range once you know your style. If you would like personal help, message us on WhatsApp and tell us which scents you currently enjoy.
